Hiking Trails

There is an abundance of hiking in Watauga county. It ranges from easy to difficult Here you will find a link to the marked hiking trails in Deep Gap and surrounding areas. The Cascades Trail is a nice one to start with. It’s an easy hike, just over a mile. The trail has long range views and leads to a gorgeous waterfall!

There are too many trails and waterfalls in the area to list, however, here are 10 of our favorites:

Fishing and Water Activities

Fishing in the area is fantastic! While you can fish on your own in many rivers and creeks (including just across from the cabin) you can also hire a guide and be sure to catch some fish! We recommend Matt Michel with Southern Appalachian Anglers

Matt Michel is a Boone native who knows all of the local honey holes and is quite the experienced angler! His father opened up one of the first fly fishing shops in Boone. Be sure to specify Matt when booking online or over the phone. Whether you fish with a guide or on your own, you will need a North Carolina Fishing License.

If you’re looking to enjoy the water by being in it, you’ve come to the right place! For the more adventurous, there’s plenty of whitewater rafting and tubing around. If you like a slower pace, how about renting a kayak, canoe or heading to the lake and taking a spin in a row boat. You will find all that you need to know here. You can also head to the beautiful Watauga Lake, just over the border in Tennessee and rent a pontoon boat at Fish Springs Marina.

The Watauga County Farmer’s Market is always a good way to spend a Saturday morning! It is open 9 am -12pm, May 1st-November 22nd. There are up to 75 vendors that offer everything from produce, meats and cheeses to art and crafts, pastries, jewelry and flowers. There are even food trucks and live music! There are also Farmer’s Markets in the winter and in Blowing Rock.

Family Activities

If you have children traveling with you, they are sure to love Tweetsie Railroad.

It features a Western-themed ride on an authentic steam train. Tweetsie was the Boone Area’s first high-tech link to the outside world from the late 1800s to the 1940 Flood. Engine #12 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

 

If you’re here in the winter, hit the slopes at one of our three ski resorts! Downhill skiing isn’t your thing? How about tubing , ice skating, snowshoeing or cross country skiing? There is something for everyone!
